It was a highlight to my experience in living in Israel and I put it on my blog each day to remember. The articles that I include each day are those that I find interesting, so I feel you will find them interesting as well. How did their orgs., Leket Israel and Yad Ezra V'Shulamit, join forces to feed 336,000 of Israel's hungry? https://www.timesofisrael.com/... On the surface, they couldn't be more different. Joseph Gitler, a Modern Orthodox lawyer from New York, Yeshiva University graduate. Aryeh Lurie, a Jerusalem-born Sephardi, descended from the Ben Ish Chai, who knew hunger firsthand as a child. Yet both men were stirred by the same plea: Jews in Israel without enough food. Each answered in his own way, building organizations that grew into nationwide lifelines. Thirty years later, Gitler and Lurie have united their efforts — creating a new force in Israel's battle against hunger. When Gitler's "Leket Israel" rescues fresh vegetables from farms across the country, they go straight to Lurie's "Yad Ezra V'Shulamit" warehouses — where chicken, fish, bread, rice, noodles, canned goods, oil, dairy, and other staples are added — turning each basket into a lifeline for 72,000 of Israel's poorest people every week – and hundreds of thousands for Rosh Hashanah. When Poverty Knocks Aryeh Lurie was born and raised in Jerusalem — in poverty. Many days, he went to school with nothing but a paper bag instead of a backpack, and often without a sandwich for lunch. But his parents taught him that no matter how little you have, you can always help someone with less. As a boy, Aryeh promised himself: "When I grow up, I will feed the poor." Aryeh Lurie, Founder, Yad Ezra V'Shulamit "My great-grandfather in Basra, Iraq, was not a wealthy man," Lurie recalled. "But he opened his home to those in need, providing food, shelter, and jobs. Among those he helped was my grandfather, who went on to marry his daughter. That spirit of giving carried into the family's arrival in pre-state Israel. During the siege of Jerusalem before the War of Independence, the Luries used their delivery trucks to bring food along the treacherous Burma Road. "Arab marauders constantly attacked," Lurie recounted. "One family member stepped on a mine and was killed. When my grandfather heard, he died of a heart attack." The family was left destitute, but the ethic of caring for others endured. Lurie's mother, Shulamit, shared her hamin (Sephardic cholent) with neighbors who were even poorer. Those early lessons shaped Yad Ezra V'Shulamit, which Lurie founded in 1988 — named for his parents — to bring food to struggling families in Jerusalem. What began as 50 food baskets for Jerusalem families has grown into a nationwide network: 12,000 food baskets delivered weekly – and 62,000 food baskets and grocery vouchers before Rosh Hashanah – hot lunches, homework help, and therapy for children, youth-at-risk centers, winter coats, school supplies, baby formula. Today, Yad Ezra V'Shualmit feeds hundreds of thousands of people all across Israel, with weekly grocery distributions and extra support before every holiday, delivering more food baskets than any other organization in Israel. "When I started Yad Ezra V'Shulamit in 1988 giving 50 baskets, I had no idea it would grow to 12,000 a week." Yad Ezra V'Shulamit distributes 62,000 food baskets for Rosh Hashanah. Well one day, by the stream, he meets a beautiful princess. he decides that he loves her, and doesn't speak for 3 years so that he can save up the words to tell her " I love you". Then, after the 3 years are up, he realizes that he wants to marry her so he stays silent for another 4 years, so he can ask " will you marry me?" The day finally comes. he's so excited, and he's kneeling by the fountain with a smile on his face. He looks up at the princess and says, "I love you. will you marry me? There was silence for a second, before she responds "sorry what was that?" An 80-year-old man is out by a pond one day when a frog jumps onto a lily pad nearby. "Excuse me sir," says the frog, "I know I may appear to be just a frog, but I'm actually a beautiful princess. A witch has placed a curse on me to keep me in this form. The only thing that can break this curse is a kiss. Sir, if you kiss me and break this curse, I'll turn back into a beautiful princess and cater to your every will and desire every day and night. So what do you say?" The 80 year old man thinks for moment then picks up the frog and puts it in his pocket and continues on his walk. "Didn't you hear me?", says the frog, "I said if you kiss me I'll turn back into a beautiful princess and give you every thing you want all day and night." "Eh", says the man, "I'm 80 years old. At this point I think I'd rather have a talking frog." Berel goes to see a great Kabbalist and says, "Can you lift a curse that a Rabbi and two witnesses put on me years ago?" "Maybe," says the Mekubal, "Can you remember the exact words of the curse?" Berel replies, "Mekudeshes Mekudeshes Mekudeshes- (I pronounce you man and wife)." Before Father Michael could say anything, a ominous dark cloud suddenly gathered out of the blue sky and a vicious lightning came down and stroke Father Michael, killing him instantly. Father Bob was completely stunned, before he could understand what was happening in front of him, he heard a thunderous deep voice coming from the sky - "Gosh Darn it!! That totally missed!" Long ago when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft... Today, it's called golf. Guy was your typical arrogant Israeli suave looking passenger and he sat down next to a pretty woman next to him for their long flight to America. He turned to her and said "Hey did the arilines charge you extra to sit next to such a handsome man?"
