Get to Heaven Keep the Seven

Everybody wants spirituality. To be a good person means to walk in G-d's ways. How does that translate to reality? The only guidebook to spirituality that has stood the test of time is the Hebrew Bible. The Bible says that the Jews will be a light onto the nations. But if you are not a born Jew, you have to convert, which is not so easy!! If you do convert, it is a lot of work to be a Jew (three times a day prayer, keeping kosher, observing the Sabbath).

This blog will show you how to be Jewish without the work!!

Don't Buy Approval

The Chafetz Chaim wrote that a major reason some people live beyond their means is to gain approval. They feel the need to spend large amounts of money on things that will gain them status, even though they are unable to afford them.

This is the opposite of a Torah way of life.

Iyar 5

In 1948, the State of Israel declared its independence, in a ceremony led by David Ben-Gurion in Tel Aviv. The first act of the new government was to remove British restrictions on Jewish immigration. The Declaration of Independence granted full civil rights to Arab citizens of Israel, and called for peace and cooperation with neighboring Arab countries. The following day, the armies of five Arab nations attacked Israel. Despite decades of hardship, terror and wars, Israel has become a world leader in research and agriculture -- and most of all, the center of spiritual inspiration for the Jewish world.

Why G-d had to Give us Israel

Iyar 6

In 1881, a wave of pogroms swept 166 towns in southern Russia, after Jews were blamed for the assassination of Czar Alexander II. In these pogroms, thousands of Jewish homes were destroyed, and hundreds of Jews were killed and injured. The new czar, Alexander III, blamed the Jews for the riots and issued a series of harsh restrictions against the Jewish community. In the wake of these pogroms, some 2 million Jews fled Russia, many settling in the United States.

How Do We Make Society Better? Left vs. Right #5

How do you want to improve America? By focusing on improving and refining yourself? Or by transforming society? The answer to that question will reveal whether you're on the Left or the Right.

I have placed before you life and death, blessing and curse, and you should choose life (Deuteronomy 30:19).

Some people who commit improper acts defend themselves by insisting that the temptation was too intense to resist. They are wrong.

A law of human behavior states that when given two options, people can choose only that which they perceive as being the lesser distress. However, individual choice decides which distress is greater and which is lesser. For example, when a hungry baby cries in the middle of the night, the parents will get up. They naturally choose to forego the greater distress - staying in bed and listening to their baby - for the lesser - getting up and feeding the baby. Extreme cases come from martyrs who choose death rather than violate principles which are sacred to them. Here, death hurts less than compromised life.

People can evaluate for themselves what is good and what is evil. Everyone is responsible for his or her own evaluations, and so submitting to the temptation to do a forbidden or improper act indicates failure to evaluate properly.

Today I shall ...
... program myself with correct evaluations of what is right and wrong so that I may make the correct choices.

Who is a Zionist?

I try to keep up on Israeli politics and I will sometimes see a reference to "non-Zionist Orthodox parties." I don't understand how people who live in Israel can be "non-Zionists." What is the definition of Zionism, anyway?

The Aish Rabbi Replies:

Zionism is the belief that the Jewish people should have a homeland in Israel.

It's impossible to say that Orthodox Jews are opposed to the concept of Zionism, because the very idea for Zionism comes from the Bible. God made a covenant with Abraham, promising him and his descendents the Land of Israel (Genesis 15:18).

Torah Jews believe that the Jewish community in Israel is part of the Divine plan for Jewish redemption. One of the great wonders of Jewish history is how the Bible foretells the Jews' return to the Land. As a first phase of redemption, God promised to in-gather all the exiles. (see for example Deuteronomy 30:1-5, Jeremiah 16:14-15, Jeremiah 31:6-7, and Isaiah 27:12)

The question, however, regards the second part of God's covenant with the Jewish people, which mandates that Jewish existence in Israel is predicated on observing the commandments. The Torah makes this clear in many places, for example Leviticus 18:28 and Deut. 11:17.

Modern Israeli society is based largely on Western ideals, even when they conflict with those of the Torah. For example, the Jewish system of jurisprudence is the basis for every great legal system in the world. The Romans derived their judicial system from the Torah, as did the Magna Carta and the U.S. Constitution. But instead the modern Israeli legal system originally adopted Ottoman law! The state has at times even made tactical decisions that devalued fundamental principles of Jewish life.

Hundreds of thousands of Israelis are now living in the Diaspora because if the goal of life is Western ideals and material success, then there's a better version available in Los Angeles!

This in no way minimizes the great things that Israel has achieved. Indeed, the first 60 years of the modern state have been miraculous. Israel has succeeded in making the desert bloom, and in building the finest hospitals, roads, schools and industry – even amidst hardship, terror and wars. For Jews around the world, Israel has been the spark for renewed Jewish identity.

My own organization, Aish HaTorah, believes that the State of Israel is a Divine gift. Aish celebrates Israel Independence Day and Jerusalem Day, and proudly flies the flag of Israel 365 days a year above its World Center at the Western Wall. And we pray daily for the protection of Israeli soldiers who put their lives on the line for the Jewish people.

And yet, Orthodox Jews would favor an Israeli society that recognizes God and Torah as the primary driving force of the nation. This means basing the laws of the State on Judaism (e.g. observance of Shabbat and Kashrut in public) – though of course non-coercive for private individuals. And the schools would place more emphasis on Torah learning.

It has been said that the Land of Israel is the "body" which hosts the Jewish nation, while Torah is the "soul." A body without a soul is empty. We yearn for a restoration of timeless Jewish values and wisdom, to fully complete the modern Jewish renaissance in Israel.

Ushpizin - Sukkot Prayer Scene

Ushpizin (Hebrew אושפיזין) (lit. "Sukkot guests", from Aramaic uspizin אושפיזין 'guests') is a 2005 Israeli film directed by Gidi Dar and written by Shuli Rand. It starred Rand, and his wife, Michal, who had never acted before. Moshe and Mali Bellanga are an impoverished, childless, Hasidic baal teshuva ("returnees to Judaism") couple in the Breslov community in Jerusalem. After Moshe is passed over for a stipend he expected, they cannot pay their bills, much less prepare for the upcoming Jewish holiday of Sukkot. Moshe admires a particularly beautiful etrog, or citron, one of the four species required for the holiday observance. They console themselves by recalling a saying of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov that difficult times are a test of faith. After some anguished prayer, they receive an unexpected monetary gift on the eve of the holiday...

End of the World fears: First red heifer 'born in Israel in 2,000 years fulfils prophecy'

THE BIRTH of a red heifer in Israel, said to be the first in 2,000 years and a "viable candidate" to fulfil Biblical prophecy, has sparked fears the End of the World is near.

Numbers, chapter 19 in the Bible details how God told Moses and the Israelites to bring a "a red heifer without defect or blemish" which was to burned as part of a cleansing ceremony.

It is said the sacrifice of a red heifer is essential for the construction of a third temple in Jerusalem, which some theologians have claimed could bring about the return of the messiah and Judgement Day.

Very few candidates for the red heifer have been found and most have been disqualified due to blemishes or pregnancies, which is why the The Temple Institute has become so interested in this latest birth.

So far it is understood the heifer is pure red without any blemishes, however this could change as the animal grows.

The Temple Institute was setup in 1987 with its main focus being the rebuilding of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

On its website the organisation claims "the tenth red heifer will be prepared by the messiah".

They also claim "there has been no red heifer for the past 2,000 years" adding: "If there are now red heifers – is ours the era that will need them?"

End of the world red heifer

End of the World fears: Some theologians believe the red heifer will trigger the second coming

Sharing a video of the red heifer on YouTube, The Institute said: "One week after its birth the heifer underwent an extensive examination by rabbinical experts, who determined that the heifer is currently a viable candidate for the Biblical red heifer (para aduma) described in Numbers, chapter 19."

The animal will then be examined again in three months time to see if it has developed any blemishes which would disqualify it.

The Institute said: "It will be examined again in three months time to determine whether it continues to possess the necessary qualifications for the red heifer, a necessary prerequisite for the renewal of the Divine service in the Holy Temple.

"The rabbinical experts who conducted the examination stress that the heifer, while currently bearing the required qualifications could, at any time in the future, become disqualified through natural causes, and therefore the heifer will be periodically reexamined."

This week, our hosts explore the fake news, ever-growing in popularity in certain circles, which offers spurious, alternate (revisionist) historical locations for the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

Did the Jewish people indeed lose the authentic location of the Holy Temple? What are all these theories, which purport that Jewish tradition for the Temple Mount's location is wrong, really about? What is their agenda? Our hosts wade into this controversy and leave no room for further doubt.

The only thing that could make this program more exciting is a special guest appearance by Jeremy Corbyn. Tune into this explosive and informative episode of Temple Talk.

The Palestinian Information Center on Thursday morning tweeted: "Extremist Settlers Attack Palestinian Boy Near His Home in Hebron." The tweet was accompanied by a picture of several masked men, and behind them stands Rabbi Raziel Shevach, father of 6, a resident of Havat Gilad near Shechem, who was murdered while driving home on the highway on January 8th this year.

Rabbi Raziel Shevach with his family

Rabbi Shevach's widow, Yael, commented on the tweet: "You know what's funny? This man, my husband, your people killed him!! Disgusting."

Moshe Fomberg commented on the same tweet: "Let's hope they won't come to arrest him now for violent activity, illegal gathering, causing harm and endangering human life … On second thought, let them come, he has an airtight alibi."

Shortly before 8:00 PM on the day of the murder, Rabbi Shevach was driving his car on the highway near his home when shots were fired at him from a passing car. Rabbi Shevach was shot in the neck, but was able to call his wife. She told Ynet at the time that her husband "called me and said, 'I've been shot, call an ambulance.' I'm still shocked and horrified at how easily they gun us down."

Why didn't somebody do something? A child asks on visiting Yad Vashem, and Dr. Suess style  rules of the Sukkah

Yehuda Lave, Spiritual Advisor and Counselor

Realize that nothing will take away the awful ache in your heart, that empty place where your children or grandchildren "should" be. But the following will help:

  1. Stop fighting to connect. Pressure tactics create resentment, rebelliousness and resistance.
  2. Keep the lines of communication open so that your children know they are always welcome in your heart and home. And if a child reconnects, smile and act happy!.
  3. Get active! You have time on your hands. Put your energy into projects where your love and concern will be appreciated. Be interested and involved in the world.
  4. Take care of yourself. Make sure you exercise daily and eat right. Become a person your children would be proud to connect to—if they decide to do so.
  5. Turn it around. Give yourself whatever you're not getting from others—Forgiveness keeps your heart open, in case they return.Strengthen the other relationships in your life
  6. Examine your relationship with G‑d. To love G‑d is to love whatever reality He gives us from moment to moment.
  7. Strengthen the other relationships in your life. Your children may have blocked you out, but you can focus on other family members and friends. Knowing that you can still give and receive love will strengthen your own sense of self.

Natural Disasters

I have watched the horror of hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes, plus hundreds of thousands of people wiped out in a tsunami. What is the spiritual reason behind all this?

The Aish Rabbi Replies:

Thank you for your thoughtful question. It is really a formulation of the classic: "Why do bad things happen to good people?" Let me try to explain:

The story is told of the king who commissioned a tapestry to be woven. In the middle of the work, someone came upon the weaver and saw a mish-mash of different colored threads, loose threads and, in general, a very messy piece of work. A complaint was issued to the king who then confronted the artist. The artist pleaded with the king for a few days to prepare his defense. After those few days he came before the king with a wrapped package and told the king, "Here is my defense." Inside the package was the completed tapestry.

The moral is that we cannot judge the work until it is completed. Moses asked to see God's face. That request was denied, but he was allowed to "see" God's "back." It is explained that Moses wanted to understand how God runs the world. The response was that it is beyond human comprehension until you see the "back." That is, until we can see the whole picture; then in hindsight it will all make sense.

While this answer may seem a "cop-out," it prevents us from trying to understand God's actions from our very limited perspective. In order for us to be able to "judge God," we need to consider God's "ground rules" for existence. Using this premise, it becomes very difficult to judge God. Why? Because we are stuck in a finite perspective of time and space, and we can therefore never be sure which rules God is employing at any given moment.

In order to begin to make sense of this, one thing we must understand is that God is in control, and there are no accidents. There has to be intrinsic meaning in our lives; otherwise we are just a random collection of molecules whizzing through space, with no real direction or purpose.

We are living in a very complex world, and in such a world, God doesn't only deal with individuals, he also deals with nations.

As we in Sukkot, we thought we would share this highly educational and humorous info-graphic explaining the rules of the sukkah (with footnotes from the Mishnah Torah) in an entertaining Dr Seuss-style rhyme. You can finds the full text and footnotes at http://www.sukkahworld.com/rules-of-the-sukkah.asp and for more Sukkos related resources visit http://www.sukkahworld.com/resources.asp.

Why didn't somebody do something?"

Gov. Mike Huckabee tells a story about one of his visits to Yad Vashem

Accustom your tongue to say "I do not know" (Berachos 4a).

While no human being can know everything, some people cannot admit any ignorance about anything. For them, any admission of lack of knowledge threatens their fragile egos. Although they try to impress others with their omniscience, they accomplish the reverse, because the more they try to conceal their ignorance, the more prominent it becomes.

Furthermore, the only way we can acquire knowledge is by accepting that we do not have it. People who claim to know everything cannot learn. Therefore, many opportunities to learn pass them by, and their denying their ignorance actually increases their ignorance.

We do not have to know everything, and no one expects us to. Today, more than ever, with the unprecedented amount of information available, no one can be a universal genius. The simple statement, "I don't know," is actually highly respected.

We should also open ourselves to acquiring knowledge from every source. Learning from someone whom we consider to be inferior to ourselves should not be demeaning. As the Psalmist says, "I became wise by learning from all my teachers" (Psalms 119:99). A willingness to learn from everyone is a sign of greatness, while affecting omniscience actually betrays ignorance.

Today I shall ...
...

admit that there are many things that I do not know. Instead, I will become willing to learn from anyone and everyone.
