Get to Heaven Keep the Seven

Everybody wants spirituality. To be a good person means to walk in G-d's ways. How does that translate to reality? The only guidebook to spirituality that has stood the test of time is the Hebrew Bible. The Bible says that the Jews will be a light onto the nations. But if you are not a born Jew, you have to convert, which is not so easy!! If you do convert, it is a lot of work to be a Jew (three times a day prayer, keeping kosher, observing the Sabbath).

This blog will show you how to be Jewish without the work!!

Identify Yourself and the seven times circling the walls of Jericho

Your identity creates you. And you choose your identity. Yes, your childhood, your parent's view of you, the way others have treated you, who you compare yourself with, all have had a part in creating your identity.

But it's only because now in the present you have decided to keep the identity you have been influenced to have. And if you haven't made a conscious decision how to view your identity, you are still making a decision, albeit a passive one.

You might already view yourself as a happy, joyous person. If so, great. If that's not yet your picture of yourself, it makes sense to start viewing yourself this way now. All you need is one moment of happiness or joy to consider yourself as one.

As you will read below, I went to Jericho on Friday morning and was stoned in a terroist attack. Thank G-d we were all ok. I learned however, some new Torah on the trip. On the night before, my wife and went to a wedding in Bnai Brak for one of her friends (pictures will be on Friday's blog). As is the Orthodox custom, the Chala (bride) circuled the Hassan (Groom) seven times. Where do we get this custom from? At Jericho The Jews circled Jericho seven times blowing the shofar and the walls came down. When the Chala circles the Hassan, the walls are to come down between them and they are to become one person.

I went to Jericho on Firday to see the Jewish sites. I was attacked by stoning in a terroist attack but we are ok

my Friend Robert (AKA Shofar the Great} invited me out to see his community of Beit Hogla East of Jericho and to go on his monthly trip to see the Religious sites of Jericho. Erna Covus runs the trips and it is a labor of love.

On our trip we were stoned in a terror attack, but with the army and an armored bus there was no damage.

There are great and important sites to see here. Not just old synagogues with moziac floors but the original wall of Rahav who saved Joshua's men before the attack on Jericho. After the Shofar's sounded (why Shofar the Great--sees Jericho as his home) the walls except for Rahav's home came tumbling down. Her house was saved because she helped save the Jewish advance team.

The Shalom Al Yisrael Synagogue, (lit. "Peace Upon Israel Synagogue"), dates to the late 6th or early 7th century CE and was discovered in Jericho in 1936.

History

The synagogue, dating from the Byzantine period, was revealed in excavations conducted in 1936 by Dr. Baramki of the Department of Antiquities under the British Mandate. An Arab family built a house over the mosaic floor and charged admission to visit it.[1]

The mosaic floor incorporates Jewish symbols such as the Ark of the Covenant, the Menorah, the Shofar and the Lulav. There is also a Hebrew inscription, "Peace upon Israel" (שלום על ישראל), after which the mosaic was named.[2]

After the 1967 Six-Day War, the site came under Israeli military control and remained under the administrative responsibility of the owners (the Shahwan family). Tourists and Jews began visiting the site regularly for prayers. In 1987, the Israeli authorities confiscated the mosaic, the house and a small part of the farm around it. They offered compensation to the Shahwan family but that was rejected. Following the Oslo Accords, the site was given to the Palestinian Authority (PA). Since then the PA has deployed a special security force to protect it.

Recent events

After the 1995 Oslo Accords, control of the site was given to the PA. It was agreed that free access to the site would continue and it would be adequately protected.[3]

At the beginning of the Al-Aqsa Intifada the site became a source of conflict. On the night of 12 October 2000, vandals entered and desecrated the building, damaging the private house on top of the ancient mosaic. Later, the PA repaired the damage.[4] The Torah scroll stored at the synagogue was rescued from the fire which had been started and was taken to Mevo'ot Yericho.

In 2005 a group of Israelis was able to visit the synagogue after it was restored by the Municipality of Jericho. Originally the IDF allowed only monthly visits - on the first of the Jewish month - in order to conduct prayer services. Beginning in July 2007 prayer services have been allowed once a week[5]

Naaran (also Na'aran) (Hebrew: נערן‬) is an ancient Jewish village dating to the 5th and 6th century CE, located in the West Bank. Remains of the village have been excavated north of Jericho, in Ephraim, between Bethel and Jericho. The mosaic floor of a synagogue was discovered at the site featuring a large zodiac design. Naaran is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 7:28 as a town in the eastern part of Ephraim.[1] Eusebius, in his Onomasticon, makes mention of the site, saying that in his day it was "a village inhabited by Jews, five miles from Jericho."[2] Aramaic inscriptions and mosaics from the synagogue are displayed at an archaeology museum established by the Israeli archaeologist Yitzhak Magen at the Good Samaritan Inn.[3]

In May 2012, the ancient synagogue was vandalized with graffiti that included swastikas and Palestinian flags.[4] Israel's Public Diplomacy Minister Yuli-Yoel Edelstein condemned the act and noted that, "The incident reaffirms the belief that Jewish holy sites must be under Israel's sovereignty."[4]

An Israeli settlement, kibbutz Niran, located several kilometers to the north, takes its name from Naaran.

Harry Houdini the escape artist.

No other escapologist or magic performer comes close to matching the fame of Harry Houdini. Harry Houdini was born as Erik Weisz on March 24, 1874 in Budapest, Hungary, as one of the six kids, to Rabbi Mayer Samuel Weisz and his second wife, Cecilia Steiner Weisz. Harry Houdini, one of history's greatest magicians, was a master of illusions, stunts and death-defying escapes.Houdini performed his most daring magic tricks right up his untimely death on Halloween 92 years ago Here are some of his most legendary feats.. 1. Hanging Straitjacket Escape RBP

Houdini famously said that he once saw a person who was trapped in a straightjacket and was desperately trying to free himself. It's from here, that Houdini got this idea from. Since his hands were tied to his back, it was really difficult for him to escape from the jacket. However, Houdini developed an ingenious, yet painful way of escape.  In this Harry Houdini magic trick, He would wriggle around in the jacket all the while trying to get his hands to the front. Most times he ended up dislocating his shoulder, but this never stopped him. After his hands came to the front, he would then proceed to use his teeth to free himself.  He became so adept at escaping the jacket that he went a notch higher by performing stunts where he would be bound in the straight jacket, while suspended upside down, with his ankles bound. He was so good at this stunt, that he would set himself free after only three minutes.

2. Milk Can Escape

RBP Referred to by Houdini as the "the best escape he ever invented" — the Milk Can Escape began with Houdini questioning how long members of the audience could hold their breath. He then poured gallons of water into the jug before he was handcuffed and folded himself inside. The milk can was secured shut with six padlocks, but after just two minutes, Houdini emerged breathless from a nearby cabinet while the can remained locked. A promotional poster for the escape featured the tagline: "Failure Means a Drowning Death."

Water Torture Cell

In this escape Houdini would have his feat locked in a pair of heavy stocks and would be lowered upside down into a tank of water. In his earliest version of the escape, he was also encased in a steel cage. The cell would be concealed in a curtain cabinet, and after several suspenseful minutes , Houdini would burst from the cabinet free. The cell would still be securely locked.

4. Buried Alive

The first time Houdini performed a buried alive stunt it very nearly killed him. Buried six feet under without a casket, Houdini struggled to dig his way to the surface and panicked when overcome by exhaustion. He cried for help and had to be pulled unconscious from the grave by his assistants. While one terrifying near death experience would be more than enough for most to quit the game, Houdini went on to perform two other variations of the buried alive trick. One required him to be sealed inside a coffin while submerged underwater for one and a half hours. Another had him strapped in a straitjacket, sealed in a casket and buried in a large tank filled with sand.

. Escape from Murderer's Row

Murderer's row was an infamous prison where the worst of the worst were locked up. Convicted murderers were the permanent inhabitants of these halls. The facility was so secure, that in all its existence, there had never been a reported escape. Well, this looked like Houdini territory and the setting of a very famous act.  In 1906, he was cuffed and stripped of his clothes so he would not hide any keys in his garments. He was then locked up in one of the prison's cells and his clothes thrown in the next cell. Typical of Harry, he freed himself in under two minutes, opened the cell door- which had also been locked from the outside- opened the next cell, where his clothes lay, and even had time to unlock other cells and shuffle up the prisoners. All these exploits he achieved in less than 21 minutes.

Happy Birthday my Sister Heather

GETTING OLDER

A distraught senior citizen
phoned her doctor's office.
"Is it true," she wanted to know,
"that the medication
you prescribed has to be taken
for the rest of my life?"
"'Yes, I'm afraid so,"' the doctor told her.
There was a moment of silence
before the senior lady replied,
"I'm wondering, then,
just how serious is my condition
because this prescription is marked
'NO REFILLS'.."

~~~~~~~~~~
An older gentleman was
on the operating table
awaiting surgery
and he insisted that his son, a renowned surgeon,
perform the operation.
As he was about to get the anesthesia,
he asked to speak to his son.
"Yes, Dad , what is it?"
"Don't be nervous, son;
do your best,
and just remember,
if it doesn't go well,
if something happens to me,
your mother
is going to come and
live with you and your wife...."
(I LOVE IT!)
~~~~~~~~~~
Aging:
Eventually you will reach a point
when you stop lying about your age
and start bragging about it. This is so true. I love
to hear them say "you don't look that old."
   ~~~~~~~~~~
The older we get,
the fewer things
seem worth waiting in line for.
   ~~~~~~~~~~
Some people
try to turn back their odometers.
Not me!
I want people to know  why
I look this way.
I've traveled a long way
and some of the roads weren't paved.
   ~~~~~~~~~~
   When you are dissatisfied
and would like to go back to youth,
think of Algebra.
   ~~~~~~~~~~
One of the many things
no one tells you about aging
is that it is such a nice change
from being young.
~~~~~~~~~~
Ah, being young is beautiful,
but being old is comfortable.
~~~~~~~~~~
Two guys, one old, one young,
are pushing their carts around-  WalMart
when they collide.
The old guy says to the young guy,
"Sorry about that. I'm looking for my wife,
and I guess I wasn't paying attention to where

I was going."
The young guy says, "That's OK, it's a coincidence.
I'm looking for my wife, too...
I can't find her and I'm getting a little desperate."
The old guy says, "Well, maybe I can help you find her..
what does she look like?"
The young guy says, "Well, she is 27 years old, tall,
with red hair, blue eyes, is buxom. . wearing no bra,
long legs, and is wearing short shorts.
What does your wife look like?'
To which the old guy says, doesn't matter,
let's look for yours."
(ADORABLE)
~~~~~~~~~~
(And this final one especially for me,)
"Lord, keep Your arm around my shoulder
and Your hand over my mouth!"
Now, if you feel this doesn't apply to you . . ..
stick around awhile . . .it will
See you tomorrow (bli neder)
