Get to Heaven Keep the Seven

Everybody wants spirituality. To be a good person means to walk in G-d's ways. How does that translate to reality? The only guidebook to spirituality that has stood the test of time is the Hebrew Bible. The Bible says that the Jews will be a light onto the nations. But if you are not a born Jew, you have to convert, which is not so easy!! If you do convert, it is a lot of work to be a Jew (three times a day prayer, keeping kosher, observing the Sabbath).

This blog will show you how to be Jewish without the work!!

Yom Hazikaron is Israel's Official Memorial Day for her fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism. ... It runs from sundown to sundown, in 2019, from May 7-8, and is followed immediately by Yom HaAtzmaut, Israeli Independence Day.

Yom Hazikaron in Israel. May 7-8, 2019

Yom Hazikaron is Israel's Official Memorial Day for her fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism. Falling either in late April or early May every year, Yom Hazikaron is an especially solemn time and marked by ceremonies and silences across the country. It runs from sundown to sundown, in 2019, from May 7-8, and is followed immediately by Yom HaAtzmaut, Israeli Independence Day.

The flag flies at half mast at the Western Wall during the State Ceremony for Yom Hazikaron.

Yom Hazikaron begins at sundown (8.00pm) when a siren is sounded across the country for one minute. Everybody stops what they are doing, including cars driving on the highway, and observes the silence to show their respect and remember the fallen. That evening, the official State Ceremony to mark the start of Yom Hazikaron takes place at the Western Wall (the Kotel) in Jerusalem. Unlike in many other countries, Israel's wars have taken place at home and being a small country, almost everybody knows somebody who died in the country's wars making Yom Hazikaron an incredibly personal time of remembrance.

Cars stop on the highway to observe the silence for Yom Hazikaron.

The following day, a siren sounds for two minutes, at 11.00am and again the country stops to remember. Following this, memorial ceremonies take place across the country – either public or private, to remember the country's fallen. That evening, between 7 and 8.00pm, another state ceremony takes place, this one at Mount Herzl, Israel's National Military Ceremony. This ceremony marks the end of Yom Hazikaron, and the beginning of Yom Haaztmaut, Israel's Independence Day, a day which contrasts dramatically to what preceded it and a strong reminder of the price Israel has paid, and continues to pay for her independence.

There are many ceremonies you can join for Yom Hazikaron, here are a few of the most iconic:

  • At the Western Wall annual ceremony for the Memorial Day opening, the flag is lowered to half-mast.
  • In Jerusalem's Safra Square there will be a ceremony

Yom Hazikaron in Jerusalem 2019

About Israel's Memorial Day

Israel Remembrance Day, called Yom Hazikaron in Hebrew, is Israel's official day of remembrance for fallen soldiers of Israel and victims of terrorism. It falls exactly one week after Holocaust Remembrance Day and considering the fact that casualties are very close to home in this small and young country, this day is extremely solemn. You will find places of entertainment closed, flags at half-mast and there are many ceremonies that take place in community centers and by memorials around Jerusalem and Israel.

In a way very unique to Israel, Remembrance Day flows straight into Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israel's Independence Day. As is often customary in Judaism, we remember the heartbreak with the joy. We acknowledge the direct connection between our loss and the independence and sovereignty that we appreciate so much today.

Yom Hazikaron is marked on the fourth day of the Hebrew month of Iyar. This year it is commemorated from the evening of Wednesday, May 8, 2019 until the evening of Thursday, May 9 (when Independence Day begins).

All local media channels are focused on this day of grief and two sirens sound during the 24 hour period when people respectfully come to a standstill.

Here are some of the things happening around Jerusalem on Yom Hazikaron:

The sirens

There are two sirens on Yom Hazikaron. A one minute siren sounds at 8:00 pm on Wednesday evening and a two minute siren sounds at 11:00 am on Thursday. Similar to the siren on Holocaust Memorial Day, people generally stop whatever they are doing – even those driving on the highway – and stand at attention throughout the duration of the siren. It is highly recommended to stand outside for the sirens in order to experience the impact of almost an entire nation coming to a standstill in honor of those who died in order to gain and preserve our freedom.

A man has been dubbed the 'world's funniest' flight attendant after a viral video shows him leaving 150 passengers in stitches with his snarky safety announcement. Cindy Kuhn, 55, captured the hilarious moment a flight attendant took to the plane's tannoy to read out his hilarious, unique take on a safety announcement. Rows of passengers are heard in the video laughing hysterically as the flight attendant put his witty spin on what are normally passenger safety instructions before take-off. Frontier Airlines flight attendant, Daniel Sandberg, started his announcement by introducing the flight attendant at the front of the plane as his wife and the one in the back as his mistress – before taking off on his three-minute comedy routine.

See you tomorrow when I will have more info on Yom Haatzmaut
