It was a highlight to my experience in living in Israel and I put it on my blog each day to remember. How did Hasheem use the laws of science to create life on Earth If the Moon hadn't formed from the Mars-size planet hitting the Earth 4.6 billion years ago, it would affect significantly the possibility of the emergence of life and its further history on our planet. When our Moon formed, it was much nearer. The Earth rotated so fast that the length of the day might have been only 4.5 hours. Its proximity caused thousands of meters/feet tall tides that happened every few hours and hit the small landmasses that the Earth had at the time. There were no continents but only tiny volcanic islands that might have been almost wholly submerged during tides. Such strong tidal effects had an enormous impact on the Earth's crust as well. It formed massive areas under the ocean to be hydrothermal vents, where life probably started. Without the Moon, there might have been volcanism but the areas with hydrothermal vents wouldn't be as large. When it comes to the emergence of life, the numbers game is important. If we have 1000 times more hydrothermal vents, the low probability of the emergence of life is higher. If life first emerged on the surface in water pools then this tidal submergence and receding water every few hours on land might have played a role in the mixing of prebiotic chemistry. The Moon stabilizes the axial tilt of our planet, which makes the climate more stable. It was dangerously out of balance a few times in the history of Earth. If it was more unstable, our planet might have become inhospitable to life for good. The tidal heating of the interior of our planet might also play a role in plate tectonics, which recycles nutrients important for life over hundreds of millions of years. Without it, complex life beyond unicellular forms might not be possible. The tides stir the water and help wash the nutrients off from land in addition to rivers. Without them, the oceans would be more barren. The availability of micronutrients is an important limiting factor for the diversity and growth of organisms far from landmasses. The tides might have helped the aquatic life find a way of colonizing land. The marine life was frequently stranded on dry land when tides receded and eventually evolved adaptations to living on dry continents faster. Many forms of life depend on the cycles of the Moon in their life processes and their internal clocks. The remains of a Mars-size planet, the Theia that hit the Earth and caused the creation of the Moon is still under our feet. There are two large hot blobs under Africa and the Pacific ocean. The hot magma rises above these blobs and via convection, it gives the direction to the movement of continental plates above. The one that is below Africa causes this continent to split into smaller fragments and caused the Pangea supercontinent to divide into the continents that we have today. The arrangement of landmasses plays a role in the climate of our planet and the history of the evolution of all forms of life on land and in the oceans. There are still many unknowns about how life emerged on our planet and its relation to its unique features. The Moon might give the Earth some of its extraordinary qualities and this in turn is why it can host complex life beyond unicellular forms.
