Description The ceremony will include remarks by the United Nations Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly and the Permanent Representatives of Israel and the United States. Professor Debórah Dwork, Holocaust scholar and educator, will deliver the keynote address. Holocaust survivor Mr. Jacques Grishaver, and Dr. Ethel Brooks, Romani scholar will speak. Dr. Karen Frostig will share her experience as the granddaughter of Holocaust victims. Musicians Ms. Shoshanna Shattenkirk, Professor Renee Jolles, Mr. Michael Shaham (grandson of Holocaust survivors) will perform. Cantor Nissim Saal will recite memorial prayers. The United Nations Holocaust Memorial Ceremony marking the 2023 International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust is organized by the United Nations Department of Global Communications. The theme "Home and Belonging" highlights the humanity of the Holocaust victims and survivors, who had their home and sense of belonging ripped from them by the perpetrators of the Holocaust. The violence of exclusion began with disinformation and hate speech that lent support to systemic injustice and discrimination, and marginalization and ended with genocidal killing. The theme reminds us of our responsibility to respond with humanity to the victims of atrocity crimes, to counter hate speech, antisemitism, Holocaust distortion and denial, and prejudice – to do all we can to prevent genocide. Following the plague of darkness, Moses warns Pharoh of the final and most severe plague- the slaying of the firstborn. Moses takes leave of Pharoh, and together with Aaron they prepare the Children of Israel for the offering of the Passover sacrifice in Egypt. They are instructed to observe five commandments: the slaughtering of the sacrifice, the smearing of its blood on the two doorposts and lintel on the entrance to their homes, eating the sacrifice after it has been roasted, eating it quickly, and eating it together with matzah and bitter herbs. These five commands are alluded to by the additional crowns above the letter "hei" (the numerical value of which is five) in the word "tzivah" (commanded) in the verse "And the Children of Israel went and did as G-d had commanded Moses and Aaron, and so they did" (Exodus 12;28). (Divrei Kohelet) I've highlighted additional crowns which also appear above the letter "hei" in the word "hetzeel" (saved) (Exodus 12;27) possibly indicating that it was the observance of these five commandments which saved the children of Israel from the final and devastating plague brought upon Egypt.
