But suddenly, in the middle of the portion, we must deal with Israel's greatest sin since leaving Egypt- the sin of the golden calf. It appears to the people that Moses' descent from Mt. Sinai with the tablets of stone is taking much longer than they had assumed it would take. The people demand a leader who will take Moses' place and Aaron finally succumbs to the pressure and builds a golden calf from the jewelry which the Israelites had so willingly contributed. The Almighty sees what is happening and says to Moses: "Go, descend, because your people have acted corruptly" (Exodus 32;7). Moses descends, sees the golden calf and the wild celebration of the people, takes the golden calf and throws it into the fire. He then makes the people drink the molten liquid. The process of uncovering the hair so that it appears unruly and the drinking of a certain liquid reminds us of what is required of the woman suspected of adultery (sotah)- a comparison made by Rashi. The uncovering of the hair and its unruliness are emphasized in the "unruliness" of the letters "ayin". The Three Musketeers at the Kotel The Three are Rabbi Yehuda Glick, famous temple mount activist, and former Israel Mk, and then Robert Weinger, the world's greatest shofar blower and seller of Shofars, and myself after we had gone to the 12 gates of the Temple Mount in 2020 to blow the shofar to ask G-d to heal the world from the Pandemic. It was a highlight to my experience in living in Israel and I put it on my blog each day to remember.
