It was a highlight to my experience in living in Israel and I put it on my blog each day to remember. On May 24, 1962, Scott Carpenter became the second American to orbit Earth aboard the Aurora 7 Mercury capsule. He completed three orbits in 4 hours and 54 minutes, mirroring John Glenn's mission but with added tasks. The capsule carried experiments: testing liquids in weightlessness and a balloon for drag and visual data, though the balloon failed to inflate. Carpenter conducted more maneuvering than Glenn, but it was limited due to fuel concerns. He was the first U.S. astronaut to eat solid food in space—freeze-dried cubes in a bag.During his final orbit over Hawaii, flight director Chris Kraft instructed him to start retrofire countdown and switch to automatic attitude control. Distracted by "fireflies," Carpenter delayed preparations. The auto system couldn't maintain the required 34-degree pitch and zero-degree yaw. Switching to fly-by-wire, he forgot to disable manual mode, wasting fuel for 10 minutes.Noticing indicator discrepancies, he aligned visually, but Aurora 7 was 25 degrees off the retrograde vector. He fired retrorockets three seconds late, adding 24 km (15 mi) to the error.
