Those who fail to do so become further away from Him. In time of danger, it is against the Torah outlook to peacefully go about your business. Not paying attention and laughing off a situation shows a lack of recognition of the Almighty's involvement in our lives. I speak from personal experience here. I had several times of danger in my life that were life and death situations. I paid attention that they were messengers from G-d and choose to get closer to G-d. While it is difficult to say that it all ended up OK, they certainly were wake up calls that changed my life.
