Get to Heaven Keep the Seven

Everybody wants spirituality. To be a good person means to walk in G-d's ways. How does that translate to reality? The only guidebook to spirituality that has stood the test of time is the Hebrew Bible. The Bible says that the Jews will be a light onto the nations. But if you are not a born Jew, you have to convert, which is not so easy!! If you do convert, it is a lot of work to be a Jew (three times a day prayer, keeping kosher, observing the Sabbath).

This blog will show you how to be Jewish without the work!!

12 Facts About Michelangelo's 'The Creation of Adam' and a genius test plus more car and gas tips

WHAT IS EMPATHY?

It means getting into another person's shoes and understanding their innermost needs.

THE KEY TO CONFLICT RESOLUTION IS EMPATHY:

EMPATHIZE WITH YOURSELF: Understand that your inner child might feel threatened, unsafe, attacked and unloved. Get into your own CHILD MIND.You cannot soothe another person until you can soothe yourself. "This is happening FOR me, not to me. This is an opportunity to accept G-d's will and to heal MYSELF by giving what I never got, such as patience, forgiveness, unconditional love, hope and faith."

EMPATHIZE WITH THE OTHER PERSON: Understand what is in the other person's heart and mind.

The Three Keys to Happiness and How to Attain Them

Countless life gurus and public speakers instruct and assure their audiences that the key to happiness lies in whatever they are about to recommend: a diet, a new gadget, or a trip to an exotic location. This prompted me to ask myself: What is the key to happiness? What makes humans happy? And finally, what does science have to say about happiness?

As a scientific field that has everything to do with our emotions and longings, psychology should have the key to happiness. In fact, psychologists today believe that there might be more than one key to happiness, namely three, to be precise. There is a whole field of psychology called positive psychology that deals with the study of happiness.
a group of people are jumping on a beach with the sun in the background

Researchers at Penn State University argue that there are 3 aspects to human happiness: pleasure, engagement, and meaning. In every activity that we do, one or a few of these aspects come into play. When present, these 3 aspects of happiness will significantly enhance your life, but when absent, they can make you feel lazy, depressed and powerless.

If you want to become a much happier person by doing a few simple exercises that we share with you in this article or seek to expand your knowledge about happiness, just continue reading.

1. Pleasure

What Is Pleasure?
Pleasure is connected to positive emotions like joy, fun, satisfaction, pride, and excitement. These emotions feel great, but they are also scientifically proven to have marked positive health consequences and will improve your social relationships.4 people join glasses with platefuls of food in the background
An example of a pleasurable activity is a fun night out with friends, an inspiring walk on a beach, a romantic date with your significant other, an interesting movie, a delicious meal, or anything else that makes you feel good.

How to Maximize a Pleasant Activity?
Don't forget that humans are social beings. Both experimental findings and, maybe, your intuition as well support the idea that engaging in a pleasant activity, like a hobby, with others is more pleasant than engaging in the same activity alone.

Exercises that Will Boost Pleasure

If you find it difficult to relax and experience pleasure, you can try the following exercises. All of these are very customizable. You can choose the format, time and frequency of these exercises. The goal is to target and promote the activities that make you savor life much more.

1. Three Pleasant Things
Remember 3 things you did today that were fun, amusing, exciting, or pleasant. Write them down and explain how they made you feel. After a week, try looking back at your list and try to gauge what makes you feel happier and makes your life more pleasant and fun, you might be surprised!

2. Plan a beautiful day
Imagine/write down all the activities you'd like to do on a perfect day. Note, they have to be realistic. If you'd like to lay in bed all day that's fine too, but try to be specific. Would you watch your favorite movie, read a great book, or do something entirely different? Now make that day happen, and then reflect: did that day feel as great as you imagined it would be? If not, why not? Repeat in some time.
3. Just set aside some time for the things you enjoy doing, such as hobbies and sports. Research proves that it is very important to be consistent to see a significant improvement. If you don't hate writing, you can also write down how you feel before and after the fun activity and check your progress every month. This will not only motivate you to continue but will also boost your positive emotions.
These Gas Tips Will Save You Hundreds of Dollars a Year!

Gas isn't cheap, but what most people don't realize is that by making just a few simple changes to the way they drive, they will save both gas and money. Following these 14 great pieces of advice can end up saving you hundreds of dollars each year. You won't know whether to kick yourself for not thinking of these yourself or to run out and give them a test drive first!
1. Advertised MPG Is a Lie
Most MPG ratings are based on tests in controlled environments, or in some cases, are completely made up. The only true way to tell a car's MPG is to drive it and divide the distance you cover by the amount of petrol you use.

2. Keep the Pedal off the Metal
Yes, it sounds good. It may even make you feel more powerful. But every time you floor it, you waste between 5% more gas in the city and up to 33% on the highway.
3. Don't Brake Too Much
Brakes should be used when you can't slow the vehicle down in other ways. If you have enough distance, just take your foot off the gas and let gravity and air friction slow you down. That saves gas wasted as heat, as well as extends the life of your brakes.
4. The Speed Limit Is Your Friend
Most cars are designed to get optimal gas consumption at around 80 kph, so as long as you don't exceed that speed, you'll save a lot of money.
5. Empty out the Boot
The heavier the car, the more gas it needs to move, so remove anything you don't need from the boot and keep only the essentials.
6. No Need to Top it Off
You may think that it's smart to give that one extra squeeze to the fuel pump, but that extra squeeze will mostly go to waste. Excess gas goes back to the station's pumps to prevent spillage, and an overfilled tank loses gas to vapor leakage and spills.
7. Idle Cars Are the Devil's Playthings
Idling your car is illegal in many places, and if it isn't where you live, it should be. If you leave your car running while you know you're going to be staying in place, even for a couple of minutes, it should be enough reason to turn that key and stop the engine. An idling car wastes gas, shortens the vehicle's lifespan, and pollutes the environment for no reason.
8. Turn Down the Air Conditioning
If you need air, turn the AC off and open your car's windows – it's a more effective way. Operating your car's AC on the highest setting can increase your gas consumption by up to 25%. Remember though - keeping the windows all the way down creates drag, which causes the car to use more gas too, so try not to open the windows all the way down.
9. Got Cruise Control? Use it!
Driving without cruise control is less efficient, resulting in higher gas consumption. If you know you're going to be driving at a certain speed for a while, switch on the cruise control and enjoy the (cheaper) ride.
10. Keep the Tires Full
A properly inflated tire can save up to 3.3% of your gas consumption, and will also last longer. If your tires are not properly inflated, you're going to be wasting about 0.3% for every 1 psi that's missing.
11. Maintenance Is Important
Getting your oil changed every 5,000-7,000 miles (8,000-11,000 km) is normal for a modern car. While you're at it, changing the filters, spark plugs, and other parts will make your car purr like a happy cat, and save you money in the long run.
12. Cheap Gas Is Better
In the past, "premium" gasoline had additives and detergents that would reduce carbon deposits in the system. Nowadays, all kinds of gas have these additives, so unless your car specifically needs premium, you can use regular and save a lot of money.
13. Keep Your Tires Straight
Nonaligned tires, even by as little as 0.17 inches, will add another 100 miles of gas usage for every 20,000 miles covered. That's about $185 that goes to waste. It'll also speed up tire wear and tear, which will also cost you a pretty penny.
14. Make Sure Your Gas Tank Is Properly Sealed
An improperly-sealed cap allows gas to vaporize. That's your money going up in the air (and polluting it along the way).

  ISRAELI SUPERFOOD: Add Spirulina To...?

With the world's population expected to rise to a staggering 9.8 billion by 2050, the question arises how to feed everyone nutritious, healthy food without ruining the planet's resources.

A surprising solution might be found in a food that was eaten by the Aztecs hundreds of years ago: spirulina.

While nowadays better known in the form of dietary supplement pills and superfood powders, spirulina is in fact a biomass of blue-green algae. It was a daily food source in the Americas until the 16th century, when it lost popularity as lakes were drained for agriculture and urban development.

Spirulina produces its own food by photosynthesis, and its cultivation requires much less land and water than that needed by cattle or poultry, making it an eco-friendly alternative to feed the world.

It's also so nutritious – dried spirulina contains 5 percent water, 8% fat, 24% carbohydrates and around 60% protein – that it's been suggested as dietary support for long-term space missions.

But how to incorporate it into everyday diets?

A team of graduate students from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology found one very Israeli answer to that – a falafel enriched with spirulina.

For an extra kick, they served it with tahini enriched with astaxanthin, a health-promoting compound found in certain algae and seafood (it's responsible for salmon's reddish color and flamingo feathers' pink hue).

It took the students – Meital Kazir, Yarden Abuhassira-Cohen, Hani Shkolnikov, Hila Tarazi and Ina Nephomnyshy – a year to conceive, develop and produce their "Algalafel."

The hard work paid off, as the team recently won first prize in a competition held by EIT Food, a European initiative focused on the food sector.

The second prize in the two-day event hosted by the Technion went to a team from the German University of Hohenheim for "Algini," a lentil-based product enriched with spirulina. Third place went to students from Finland's University of Helsinki, who created "Spurtti," a vegan oatmeal dessert enriched with spirulina.

EIT Food supports creative and economically sustainable initiatives that promote health, access to quality food and the environment. The project included three industrial partners: Israel's  Algatechnologies, which supplied the raw microalgae materials used by the competing teams, Germany's Doehler and Finland's Fazer.

av Kav Reform: Tel Aviv buses no longer accept cash. Here's how to navigate the new system without going insane

Posted on  04/01/2019Author  DIY Tel Aviv  0

Like many countries around the world, Israel is moving towards cashless buses. The reason for this is mainly safety: removing the need for drivers to deal with passengers, cash and dishing out change will allow them to concentrate more on the actual driving and might also speed up boarding for everyone.

Rav Kav cards are handy. They can be used on both buses and trains and save you time and having to carry cash around. I love my San Francisco Clipper Card and my London Oyster Card. I enjoy the ease of use, even if I don't so much enjoy the Black Mirror-like tracking aspect of electronic travel cards. In theory, this move is a very good idea.

But like everything in Israel, this reform has been poorly planned and executed by people who most likely have never actually seen the inside of a bus. The result is a Hebrew-centric mess that leaves even Israelis confused, let alone tourists and English speakers. Luckily, DIY Tel Aviv is here to help you work it out! This information will also find its way to the next update of the guide at some point.

What's the deal?

There are several bus companies that serve Tel Aviv. You now officially can't use cash to ride Dan buses (the most common ones), but this will be extended to other metropolitan bus companies as of January 18th. Even if you already have a Rav Kav card, you will not be able to charge it on the bus.

If you're headed out of the Tel Aviv extended metropolitan area on an intercity bus from the central bus station, you can still just purchase a ticket as normal.

So do I have to get a Rav Kav card to travel on Tel Aviv buses now?

The good news is that you don't. There is a free English language app called  HopOn that you can download to your phone and use it to pay on the bus. You will scan a QR code with your phone when you board the bus and pay that way. You can also use this handy app to pay for a Tel-O-fun bike (the city's community bike scheme) and to find out when your bus is coming. The downside to this app is that you need to have a smartphone and be willing to input payment details (i.e. your credit card) into it. It will make your life a hell of a lot easier, though. If you really hate the thought of putting your credit card details in your phone (and I know a lot of people do), I'd consider getting one of those disposable / rechargeable cards and using that instead of your regular card in the app.

The HopOn app is, in my opinion, the best way to deal with this new reform as a tourist or visitor, though not as quick as using a Rav Kav. If you think you'll only be using buses occasionally while here, it's a lot easier to make this work than it is to buy and charge a card. It also won't leave you with unused money on the card if you miscalculate your amount of travel and then go home.

Of course, if you don't have a smartphone, this is somewhat less helpful, so let's look at other ways to make this work if you're smartphone-challenged or the app doesn't like your credit card.

Buying a Rav Kav card

You can buy these at designated stalls around town including all Tel Aviv train stations, the central bus station (level 6 next to where you buy bus tickets and level 7 by the info point) and even at the arrivals hall at the airport (supposedly it's open 24 hours on weekdays there). It costs 5NIS.

I've not tried it myself, but supposedly there is a transition period that will go on for a month or so, where if you don't have a Rav Kav yet you should be able to board a bus, pay the driver 10.90 NIS in cash and get a Rav Kav card plus your paid ride. You will get no change, though and won't be able to charge your Rav Kav on the bus beyond that ride.  I would suggest using an alternative method to pay, as set out below, but this is good for an emergency. You'll get more sympathy as a tourist even if the transition period is over. It's important to note that a lot of supposedly temporary things in Israel end up being extended indefinitely, so who knows? You may be able to buy a card on the bus for quite some time.

Charging the card

The HopOn app will let you charge the card from your phone, if your phone has NFC. This is handy if you use buses a lot and don't want to be faffing around with your phone and scanning codes every time you board a bus. Not all smartphones have NFC, though, so this may not be right for you.

Luckily, you can also charge Rav Kav cards  using a card at cash points, kiosks / convenience stores and big chains like Superpharm, Good Pharm (pharmacies), Tzomet Sfarim (book shops) and charging points that are supposedly going to be scattered around town, including Tel-O-fun docking stations. Look out for purple stalls or units with the green and purple Rav Kav logo / colour scheme which can be seen on top of this post. Information is often in Hebrew, so you may miss it otherwise. In shops there are generally no special units. Just pay at the till. Some places let you charge your card using cash, but not all.

Extra bonus info

If you're buying a Rav Kav and want to use it to tour the country (great idea), please note: if you charge your card with "Erech Tsavur" (pay as you go) rather than a travel card or a particular plan, you can just touch and go on buses, but you can't touch and go for trains. You need to go to a machine first and buy a journey with the money on the card.

The Only Israeli Plastic-Recycling Plant Closed Its Doors

Aviv Industries closed the only factory in Israel to recycle plastic bottles in Neot Hovav yesterday. From now on, all plastic waste from Israel will be transported abroad, reports  Ynet.

The company continues to operate, but closed the plant, dismissing most of its 70 employees.  The plant began reducing activity due to financial problems last year. The Mizrachi family, owners of the plant, tried to receive grants from the Ministry of Economics and Industry, as well as from the Environmental Protection Ministry's cleaning fund, but these efforts did not bear fruit.

How to Stay Warm in a Car With No Heat

If you don't have any heating capabilities inside your car, then you could be in for a nasty ride this winter. However, it doesn't necessarily need to be this way, since there are a number of things you can do to warm your vehicle up with very little effort. Here are ten of the most effective ones:

car in snow

1. Get a plug-in seat warmer

If your vehicle isn't fancy enough to come with built-in seat warmers, it doesn't mean that you can't have a warm seat. Simply get your hands on an after-market seat cover to help thaw out and warm up the vehicle while you drive.

2. Install a block heater

If you install a block heater on your vehicle's engine, it will heat the engine as well as all of its vital fluids, despite freezing temperatures. Such heaters will both help the engine components work better while also heating up the engine more quickly and helping to warm up the passenger compartment

3. Purchase a heated hat

According to the experts at Harvard Health, there's little subcutaneous fat for insulation in your head. "As a result, even if the rest of your body is nicely wrapped up, if your head is uncovered you'll lose lots of body heat—potentially up to 50 percent of it—in certain cold-weather conditions." If you find that a regular hat isn't cutting it, then get your hands on an electric one!

4. Stash wool blankets in the car

Wool is an excellent insulating fabric since it naturally traps air. That's we recommend keeping a couple of wool blankets in your vehicle since you never know when they might come in handy!

5. Buy a steering wheel warmer

You need your hands to drive, but they're likely to get stiff and cold if you don't have a heater. If you buy a steering wheel warmer, you'll be able to plug it into your vehicle's power socket, which will then allow it to automatically release a temperature of 95°F to 113°F to warm up your hands.

6. Keep a Stash of disposable heating packets

Keeping a stash of single-use, disposable hand and feet warming packets in your car will prove invaluable when you're stuck in sub-zero temperatures without any heating.

7. Start your vehicle earlier than usual

Starting up your car a good 10 to 15 minutes before you plan on driving off, the engine will add heat under the hood and with the fan turned on, it will heat up the inside of the vehicle by quite a few degrees.

8. Buy a small heater

If you get your hands on a dashboard heater that plugs into your car's power socket, you will end up directing heat to the front, top and all around your car, thanks to thehigh-powered fan, and the two well-placed vents that target both the windshield and the car's interior
