It was a highlight to my experience in living in Israel and I put it on my blog each day to remember. The articles that I include each day are those that I find interesting, so I feel you will find them interesting as well. I don't always agree with all the points of each article but found them interesting or important to share with you, my readers, and friends. It is cathartic for me to share my thoughts and frustrations with you about life in general and in Israel. As a Rabbi, I try to teach and share the Torah of the G-d of Israel as a modern Orthodox Rabbi. The most important psychological principle I have learned is that once someone's mind is made up, they don't want to be bothered with the facts, so, like Rabbi Akiva, I drip water (Torah is compared to water) on their made-up minds and hope that some of what I have share sinks in. The tenants know the owners in Ofakim well and had invited them many times to come for a Shabbos, but they never came. Finally, this year, when the owners were invited for Simchas Torah, their tenants in Ramat Eshkol wouldn't take 'no' for an answer:"We already cooked the food for you – you have to come!" So the owners came and were thereby spared the horrific events of that day in the south. One of their neighbors in Ofakim was killed, another taken hostage. But the owner's family was saved! When the owners were asked, in what merit might they have been saved, the wife replied: "The rent in Ramat Eshkol keeps climbing higher 5K, 7K, 9K… When we finally told our tenants that we'd have to increase their rent, they said they understood it was our right to do so, but they couldn't afford the increase and would have to move away. "My husband asked our tenant if he learned three sedarim a day. When he said he did, we decided that in the zechus of his Torah learning we wouldn't raise the rent. So we've been keeping the rent the same all these years. Rav Fox concluded: "This family's high regard for Torah was the zechus to save them. Ahmed I came across this quote from the late Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks: "To be a Jew is to be part of the most remarkable story ever lived, by any people, covering more countries, more adverse circumstances, more triumph and tragedies than any other story. Every one of us has a chapter to write in that story and hand the book on. That is what it is to be a Jew." What struck me about the quote is its radical inclusivity. It's all in there. Every aspect, every moment, every drama of the Jewish experience since time immemorial is included. Tragedies, triumphs, everything in between. In addition to every moment, Sacks makes sure to include every Jew. Every Jew is part of "the most remarkable story ever lived" and "has a chapter to write in that story and hand the book on." It's more pleasant, of course, when we're writing a triumphant chapter like the creation of the state of Israel, or the success of Jewish comedy in America, or a spiritual renaissance among the new generation. This chapter isn't. Since Oct. 7, we've been living through perhaps the darkest time of our Jewish lives. Many of us are still dizzy and numb from the shock of the massacre, not to mention the alarming rise in Jew hatred throughout much of the world. There is a human tendency to take such moments of extreme darkness and treat them as extreme exceptions. We want to file them away in a special box so we never have to experience them again. But there is an opposite tendency to allow the darkness to invade our souls and blind us to the presence of light. This is why I found the quote from Rabbi Sacks so powerful—it embraces the darkest darkness and the brightest light. It elevates light without underplaying darkness. It reminds us that they are both part of the most remarkable story ever lived. Rabbi Sacks entered my life this morning to remind me that all these extremities of Jewish life are part of our story. They have shaped us into who we are. And just as a horrible tragedy may have befallen us, there are chapters of triumph yet to be written.
