Get to Heaven Keep the Seven

Everybody wants spirituality. To be a good person means to walk in G-d's ways. How does that translate to reality? The only guidebook to spirituality that has stood the test of time is the Hebrew Bible. The Bible says that the Jews will be a light onto the nations. But if you are not a born Jew, you have to convert, which is not so easy!! If you do convert, it is a lot of work to be a Jew (three times a day prayer, keeping kosher, observing the Sabbath).

This blog will show you how to be Jewish without the work!!

Jerusalem Cultural Center being constructed as I watch

Rabbi Yehuda Lave

Joyful Dreams

Before you go to sleep, you have a great opportunity to condition your mind to be more joyful by programming yourself to have joyful dreams. Simply repeat the words, "Joyful dreams," in a calm and peaceful tone of voice.

You might also suggest ideas for a joyful dream. With patience and persistence, you will eventually see results.

After upgrading the joy in your dreams, you can condition your mind for more courage, kindness, and serenity by suggesting to yourself, "Brain, please create more dreams of courage, kindness, and serenity."

Today is a very important day for MONEY

Word of the Day: Parnassa

Parnassa (also written parnassah) means livelihood. It is your income and your ability to support yourself. Traditionally, it has meant your "living" in the sense of "making a living." I think the shift in people (primarily men) learning instead of being a breadwinner has shifted the "definition" to one focused more directly on the money a "living" is intended to provide. However, job ads or solicitations will often ask "are you looking for some parnassah?"

If you're looking for extra parnassah in your life, today is an auspicious day for you! This week's parsha, (every week a section of the Bible is read in the synagogue on Saturday--The chapter of the week is called the Parashas)   Parashas Beshalach, includes the portion describing how the Jewish people received the manna from heaven for the first time. That mana, bread from heaven, was their livelihood, the Jewish people's ability to survive the desert. There is a custom to recite this chapter on the Tuesday of that parsha as a way of requesting your own increased livelihood. That day happens to be today. The publisher Artscroll emailed out a link to a PDF interlinear translation of this chapter if you would like to read this passage in the Hebrew with the translation underneath. However, you can recite the passage just as effectively in any language. In fact, saying it in your native language is probably more effective for increasing your bitachon (trust in Hashem) that Hashem will provide you with what you need.

There is a lesser-followed custom that people in need of parnassa will recite this chapter every day (presumably until the parnassa comes along). A more common custom for daily (or as-needed) use is that there is an optional passage in the thrice-daily Amidah (Shemoneh Esrei) that you can pray (daven) . The passage should be off to the side or bottom of the page. Artscroll prayer books,  put it in a gray box like the holiday insertions. The prayer for livelihood is inserted in the section of the Amidah for the acceptance of our prayers. There will be a mark that will tell you where to insert the prayer at the bottom of the page. As with the chapter, you can say the prayer for livelihood in either Hebrew or your language of choice, even if you normally daven the rest of the Amidah in Hebrew.

"Cast your burden upon Hashem and He will support you."

Virtual Judaica

The Death Certificate of R. Menahem Mendel Schneerson, issued in New York in 1995, is up for grabs at the Virtual Judaica website. The current price is $1,100, the minimum bid to beat that would be $1,200.

Virtual Judaica conducts online auctions of rare Judaica items, which can be viewed in person by appointment at the Virtual Judaica Exhibition Hall, 1760 Fifty Third Street, Brooklyn, NY.

The official Death Certificate of R. Menahem Mendel Schneerson issued on August 2, 1995 by the New York City Department of Health — more than a year after the Rebbe's demise — to his next of kin, is described as a single page, 11 by 8.6 inches, with light age staining and creased folds. The Rebbe passed away in Beth Israel Hospital, Manhattan, on June 12, 1994, and his closest next of kin was his niece from the town of Rechovot, Israel, who is listed on the certificate.

Ideal for framing.

Friday is French 'Everyone With a Kippa' Day in Solidarity With Embattled Jews It's time in France for non-Jews to stand in solidarity with Jews, after brutal anti-Semitic attacks.

Following recent attacks against Jews in France, some Jewish supporters have called for Friday, Jan. 15, to be "#TousAvecUneKippa," or "Everyone With a Kippa" day, in solidarity with French Jews.

The idea was motivated by the announcement by the president of the Jewish Community of Marseille, France, who was understood to tell Jews in France not to wear their kippot in public, following an ISIS-inspired machete attack against a Jewish teacher, Benjamin Amsellem, in that town on Monday, Jan. 11. Amsellem was wearing a kippa when he was attacked.

The teenager who attacked Amsellem came to France from Turkey. He praised ISIS and reportedly told the French authorities, "I don't represent DAESH (ISIS), they represent me."

The same day as the attack on Amsellam, a French Jewish politician was murdered in his home.

Zvi Ammar said what he actually said was taken out of context, but in any event, the incident gave rise to a movement of strength in the face of an apparent suggestion to hide one's Jewishness. Ammar himself is supportive of the "#TousAvecUneKippa" movement.

In addition to encouraging all Jews and other people of ever religion to don a kippa in solidarity with the embattled Jews of France, a photoshop frenzy has broken out, with people posting photos of celebrities or national figures with photoshopped on kippot, along with the hashtag. Some folks have even begun posting obviously "kippa-shopped" famous artwork, such as the Mona Lisa.

Chabad in France have been distributing kippot for all those interested in participating, who don't yet have their own kippot.
